They are particularly trained in athletics, swimming and boxing. LSA athletes who won medals in athletics secondary girls were Leah Creer who won individual gold medals in m and m run, while June Marie Maygon won silver medals in the same events.
Creer and Maygon were also part of the foursome that won gold medals in the 4xm relay and 4xm relay. Winnie Loreno won a bronze in triple jump while Ellen Nayon earned a silver in discus throw. In athletics for elementary girls, Rosemarie Onorvida won golds in the individual m and m run including in the m hurdle.
For secondary boys, Francis Acedillo win two silvers in the m low hurdles and m run. For secondary girls, LSA athletes who won medals include Mary Grace Orquesta who won gold in the m freestyle and silver medals in the m individual medley and m freestyle respectively. Catherine Montecillo won gold in m breaststroke and silver in m breaststroke; Gay Marie Garrido won silvers in m and m Butterfly respectively; Ivy Soledad won bronze in the m Butterfly and silvers in the m and m freestyle; and, Kezia Mariel Meneses won silvers in the m and m backstroke and a bronze in the m freestyle.
Similarly, DepEd Superintendent Bernardo Adina stressed that he is satisfied with the standing of the delegation he led. Catubao reported that Adina was with his athletes all the while, he did not stay in a hotel, to ensure that their needs were met. He added though that Eastern Samar Governor Conrado Nicart provided them also vehicles to tranport some of their equipments to Calbayog City.
As the athletes returned, Representative Ben Evardone awarded the medalists with corresponding cash incentives. Handled by the City Sports Council, the run will cover two categories, one for a three-kilometer run and another for six kilometers, and at the last count more than individuals and groups had signified their intention to join even days before the February 1 deadline.
A registration fee of P per individual participant was required to join, and the money will be used to buy T-shirts and singlets to be worn by the runners, and any remaining sum will be used to donate relief goods for displaced people in Saint Bernard. Prizes will be received by top three runners in both categories, while those who survived up to the finish line will also receive consolation prizes, it was learned.
The three kilometer route starts from the city hall up to Pilot School, barangay Mantahan, and back to city hall, while the six kilometer trek also starts at city hall up to provincial capitol, barangay Asuncion, and back again to city hall.
Samaco said aside from marathons, the city will be hosting in May the amateur boxing association tournament, a nationwide activity that is expected to draw visitors to the city. Damian Mercado, in which no less than 5, guests will be around, Samaco said.
Aside from the field of athletics, Samar is also the overall champion in the lawn tennis competition.

This was disclosed by Mrs. Mercedes Daco, a member of the Samar Secretariat, in a phone interview made by the Catbalogan Infocen.
According to Daco, aside from athletics and tennis, their group is also optimistic to win another gold medal in basketball, as it is scheduled to play the championship game against the Biliran island team. With the notable victory of the Samar athletes, the said sports group headed by its Division Sports Coordinator, Dr. Eduardo Pabunan, is optimistic their team will still obtain the victory in the forthcoming Palarong Pambansa.
EVRAA Meet 2018 opens with a splash; delegates perform despite rains
The Samar delegation is composed of athletes of the high school and elementary levels in the Samar island, together with 34 officiating officials under the Samar DepEd. Adina mentioned coaches Rolando Cada and Ester Padriga as instrumental in winning the gold. In an additional text message, Adina said that the Lawaan Central Elementary School in Lawaan, Eastern Samar was also proclaimed champion in baseball elementary division.
Eastern Samar had more than athletes who trooped to Calbayog City for the biggest sporting event in the region as it opened on January 30, In an interview, while Eastern Samar team was preparing for the sports event, Training Director Ernesto Catubao hailed the support of Adina, some mayors, and the top leaders of the province.
Mel Senen Sarmiento impressed their visitors as they treated them to a day of solidarity, complete with cultural presentations, food treats and even fireworks. Adina, Catubao and the athletes who wear the blue and gold uniforms are enthusiastic that they will still continue to reap gold, silver and even bronze to make it to Palarong Pambansa Though, Olita did not mention who got the said prizes, whether in the elementary of secondary level, which the city had participated. The city delegation is still hopeful to grab more medals for the regional one-week sports activity.
Elimination rounds for other events are still on-going, Olita said. It was attended by hundreds of athletes, officials, and teachers including city employees and the general public. But the preparations were disturbed by rains especially the preparation of the track and field oval at the Southern Leyte Sports Complex and the baseball and soccer fields.
However, covered courts were ready in the different barangays to host the indoor events. It was one of the few EVRAA meets which were not postponed even if the preparations were disturbed by the rains.
The days countdown hit the target opening day on January 29, Delegations kept arriving staring January 26, And every thing was set for the opening ceremony. Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali, who was in-charge of sports in the DepEd, was the guest of honor. It showcased the unity and solidarity of our leaders which did not happen in the other provinces and cities. Our national gold and silver medalists carried the torch around the track. The urn and signage lighting was invented by city hall scientist Rudolph Sanchez upon my suggestion that it should be the climax of the opening ceremonies.evraa meet 2010 opening
It was the tradition of major international games that the lighting of the urn will be the biggest surprise of the opening. We started the parade at 3: What followed was the very enjoyable Welcome Night at the city gym. The sun shone so brightly and the highlighted lighting of the Friendship Flame, the pyrotechnics of the EVRAA signage and the fireworks display went on perfectly.
Maasin City delegation was housed at the Maasin City College campus. It was so secured and we had protected the rooms from vandalisms especially that we can impose discipline on our own athletes. The rooms were newly painted but there were no writings whatsoever because we let them love the building because it is our own college, financed and operated by the city government. Competitions began on January As expected powerhouse Leyte dominated most of the games.
They are the biggest delegation numbering more than athletes and officials. Maasin City athletes fought hard to show the home crowd that we are determined to become champions in some events and to go for the gold. The most interesting of all was our delegation in the archery event.
